RE: Yep...Another Battery Question

Someone asked about hooking them up in parallel, versus just bringing two and using one as a spare. I have thought about parallel, but here is my concern -- sometimes, a battery fails unexpectedly, or someone leaves a light on, or whatever. If the batteries are in parallel, the strong one will cover for the weak one and you will not know that there is a problem until both are dead.
By contrast, using just one at a time lets me monitor how much power I have used on that battery. When it gets low (to 12.1), I switch them.
Maybe I am wrong -- I would sure like to hear from those who know more than I do. I am not an expert, by any means!

Eastern Sierra Trip Report -- fall color

If you get the opportunity, we recommend a fall trip (next year) to the Eastern Sierra -- wonderful aspens, great hiking, cool weather -- feel free to check out our blog:
http://danschechter.blogspot.com/2008/10/fall-color-in-eastern-sierra-sept-2008.html
I am going to try to post a sample pic -- it doesn't always work:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/ProfDanSchechter/SOkq3ILf41I/AAAAAAAAAWw/FR2X0qWcCkg/s640/20%20Grass%20Lake.jpg
(Note to moderator -- I recently posted a similar item on the boondocking forum -- I hope that is ok -- if not, please delete -- but this trip had to do with dry camping, and I thought that the Campground/Destination folks might be interested in this area.)

RE: Campgrounds in California

DazzleD, you probably did the right thing by getting out of Sequoia before the snow hit -- but seeing the Sequoias in deep snow is a real treat -- I am posting a link to our blog with pix of the blizzard of March 2006 (snowshoeing!) and will try to post a picture -- the pix don't always work:

RE: First time in RV - California Trip Advice

In Santa Cruz, we like Smithwoods -- it is next to Cotillion but a little nicer, I think. Both are good. Try to get a site right on the river, if possible. See rvparkreviews.com -- these parks may be listed under the town of Felton.
And welcome to California!!

RE: More Eastern Sierra Fall Color

Mike, that is Grass Lake, just south and above North Lake, which is west of Lake Sabrina, off Highway 168, near Bishop, Calif. About 10,000 feet -- only about a mile and a half from the parking lot. Not difficult to reach -- kind of steep, but the footing is very good, and there is plenty of shade. The climb to the lake is almost entirely through aspens.
Lots of great campgrounds in this area, too! And excellent trout fishing -- we did not fish, but everyone else was raving about it.

RE: Posting pictures within text messages

OK, that worked! The trick appears to be to post the pic to Picasa Web Album, click on the pic to enlarge it, right click on the pic to get properties, triple click on the URL, copy it, paste it to a word processor without formatting, and then paste that unformatted URL into the image editor box in rv. net. As easy as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, . . . . .

RE: More Eastern Sierra Fall Color

Tiger, you will have better luck next year, for sure -- the only way we saw most of this color was by getting way up high, and the long steep hikes would have been impossible this year with your surgery. Hang tough with the physical therapy -- see you in September of 2009!!

At least the link to the blog works. But when I try to post a picture inside my message, it works once in a while, but usually not. No idea why. I follow the instructions very carefully.

RE: More Eastern Sierra Fall Color

Yep, no pix. If someone has a foolproof posting technique, I volunteer to be the fool to prove it.
(Edit -- I am my own fool. I figured out that I have to use Picasa Web Albums instead of my blog as the source for the picture.)

More Eastern Sierra Fall Color

Our trip wasn't as adventurous as Tiger's -- we couldn't find any great boondocking near Bishop Creek -- but we saw some mighty fine color. At the end of our trip, we ended up in Tuttle Creek, a BLM site -- so I guess that qualifies as dry camping on public land, if not real boondocking.
For some reason, I can't post pictures on rv.net --- I have tried every trick to make it work, but no go. Anyway, please feel free to take a look at my blog:
Fall Color in Eastern Sierra
Edit: I think I have figured out how to post a sample picture -- let's see if this works:

RE: Yep...Another Battery Question

I installed two Costco group 27s on my tongue (actually on the trailer's tongue). Each has 110 amp hours. So far, so good! I can go for four or five days of dry camping on each battery. When the first one drops to 12.1 volts, I switch them out. I think that 6 volt batteries are better but more expensive.
The other trick is to keep them charged when not camping -- I really like my Batteryminder Plus. Easy to use and it works.

Believe it or not, Shady Lane is very well-run. Check it out on rvparkreviews.com. Not pretty, but safe and quiet.

RE: PUERTO PENASCO

Are you talking about Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) in Mexico? If so, maybe ask on the Mexico forum? I don't think the BLM has any land down there, but I suppose it is possible -- maybe the federal government is bailing out Mexico, too. ;)
